"De avonden" is a beautifully sombre novel in which we glance into the thoughts of a young man named Frits; and where we learn about the outer and inner troubles he encounters. Outer troubles in the form of his immediate, smallminded environment; and inner troubles in the form of the struggles he has with his own pessimistic, depressive nature.

The (now deceased) author, Gerard Reve, read the whole book as it would later on be released as an audiobook. Both Cosmic Silence and myself have chosen a specific part of his reading to use as an introduction to our respective walls.
